Thick smoke billowed from wildfires burning near Pemberton in British Columbia on Saturday (July 18), as helicopters carried out aerial firefighting operations over hills blanketed in smoke during Canada's ongoing wildfire season.

The footage comes as wildfires continue to rage across the country. According to federal authorities, 69 new fires were recorded overnight, taking the total number of active wildfires nationwide to 955. So far, more than 28,500 square kilometres (around 11,000 square miles) have been scorched.

Officials said wildfire activity in Ontario has started to ease, with more favourable weather conditions expected over the next few days, offering some relief to firefighting efforts.

Smoke from the blazes has also drifted across the Canada–US border, triggering air quality alerts in several parts of the United States. On Saturday, the US Environmental Protection Agency classified air quality as unhealthy across a wide region extending from southern Ontario into parts of the US Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.
